2011 East Cesar Chavez Holiday Party!

Another great holiday party has come and gone. It was encouraging
to see so many new people share in the holiday cheer. We had residents,
business owners, elected officials and other dignitaries joining in on the fun. Our
unofficial count was about 110 guests. This would not have been possible if not
for the generous donations from the businesses below. Please remember them in
2012 when you are choosing where to spend your dollars. May you enjoy a
    prosperous new year!

Thanks for helping to make our neighborhood a “cooler” place to live. Please contact Kathy McWhorter, 512-478-9478 for more details.

Happy Anniversary to Festival Beach Community Garden!

Congratulations to the Festival Beach Community Garden on reaching their first anniversary! The garden held an official  Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, June 4th. Mayor Lee Leffingwell proclaimed the day “Festival Beach Community Garden Day.” Sustainable Food Center Board President Sara Bohn, Austin Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Hensley, Austin Parks Foundation Board President Jill Nokes, and many garden experts also presented!

Hundreds of gardeners and guests were served food and drinks prepared by neighborhood restaurants and others businesses throughout Austin. The party featured music, garden tours, and lots of laughter!  Thanks to the many neighborhood businesses who contributed donations especially Eastside Pies who used vegetables grown in our garden as toppings on the pizzas they donated.

The garden is located on Waller St. at Cleremont St. We welcome you to drop by the 2nd Saturday of each month, when we conduct our monthly workdays. You are welcome to bring a pair of gloves and pitch in, or just stop by for a quick garden tour. For more information, visit the Festival Beach Community Garden website or email info@festivalbeachgarden.org.

Leadership Team Additions. Welcome New Members!

In May, we elected Ken Johnson, a serving nonprofit representative, as our new secretary. Contact Ken if you have items to add to our meeting agenda (see the Get Involved page for more information). Thank you for your service, Ken!

We elected Pilar Sanchez as our new Sector 1 residential representative.  Pilar works for the Housing Authority of Austin and created an Eastside business development resource center, Emerging Enterprises, which provides classes, expert counseling, and or help writing business or marketing plans.   She’s responsible for auditing and evaluating all HACA programs.  Her entrepreneurial spirit and connections to the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and her role as chair for its Foundation helped her win the YWCA 2010 Woman of the Year “Leader of Promise Award.” Welcome to the team, Pilar!

We have a new Donations Coordinator! Richard Roberts owns and operates a home-based business called Envios a Mexico in his historic home known as the Mooreland House.  (His home was recently featured on our 2011 Neighborhood Homes tour.) His primary work involves shipping packages to Mexico via PaqMexUsa.com.  He has strong ties to our schools, shops, and neighbors who share his vision for saving the unique character of our neighborhood, especially our older buildings that create the feel of our commercial districts.  If you have donations that can be used for our special events, action projects or youth support programs, call Richard at 512-351-9436. Welcome, Richard!

    Current Team Openings

We are actively recruiting a residential renter representative to join our Leadership Team. For more information, see the Current Team Openings page or contact Lori (512) 478-6770.

ECC’s First Annual Homes Tour a Big Success!

On the afternoon of Sunday, May 22nd, ECC neighbors with historic homes opened their doors and shared their stories with about 50 guests who explored our communal history, learned practical approaches to home preservation, and met more neighbors. We want to extend our appreciation to all the families and volunteers especially our UT intern, Julie McGilvray, for participating. You can take a virtual tour of the homes included in the tour on this website: 2011 Neighborhood Homes Tour. And read more about our Historic Preservation action team efforts!
