Humane Society’s Community Cat Project in 78702

    Dear 78702 Community:

The Community Cat Project is working to help feral/stray cats in your neighborhood and right now we are focused on the 78702 zip code.  If you have stray cats at your home, work, or hang-out spot, give us a call or email communitycats@austinhumanesociety.org. We can help you get them fixed and vaccinated for free! All cats will be returned to the exact location where they were trapped within a few days.

What is TNR? Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) is the only humane and effective approach to controlling feral cat over-population. With TNR the cats are trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, the left ear-tipped for identification and returned to their territory. An ear-tip is the universal symbol that a cat is spayed/neutered and rabies vaccinated. Community cats thrive outside and can live a healthy and happy life. They are bonded to their colonies and environment.

Why is it important? TNR ensures healthier community cats by decreasing the spread of illness. TNR reduces the number of cat intakes at local shelters and the number of kittens born into homelessness. Reduce nuisance behaviors such as fighting, yowling, or spraying. TNR helps keep Austin “No-Kill”

How can you help?  Your participation reduces the number of cats entering our city’s shelter and provides for a happier and healthier life for the cats. Volunteer to trap cats in your neighborhood. We can show you how to do it and rental traps are available at the Austin Humane Society. Let us know where community cats are living in your area. Some cats live on locked or private lot so temporary access will need to be granted at certain locations. Also, getting the information out there is a huge piece.

We are focusing on the 78702 zip-code, but all community cats from Travis Co. are welcome in our FREE TNR clinic. Appointments are necessary as our clinic usually fills up.  Our spay/neuter clinic days are every Wednesday and Thursday and first Monday of the month. Check in is from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m.All cats must arrive covered and in humane traps, large enough for the cat to stand and turn around in.

More information and appointments at http://www.austinhumanesociety.org/ferals

Thank you for helping your community cats!

TreeFolks is offering FREE TREES in our neighborhood

TreeFolks, a local non-profit, will be offering free trees in our neighborhood through their NeighborWoods program.

They will mark yards that qualify for a free street tree with small flags and leave an order form at the front door.

To get your trees, just fill out the order card and drop it in the mail. TreeFolks even delivers the tree right to your doorstep. TreeFolks delivers the trees, along with planting and watering instructions, between October and March. For more information, visit www.treefolks.org/nw .”

NeighborWoods is sponsored by Austin Energy to lower summer temperatures and reduce energy consumption by investing in tree canopy cover that will shade paved streets, therefore combating the Urban Heat Island Effect.

CodeNEXT goes into the field: Public invited to 7 Community Walks

Austinites are invited to join a one-hour interactive walk Oct. 16 with the CodeNEXT team, the first in a series of seven Community Walks asking: As the local expert on where you live, what could be improved around you

The City of Austin is hosting seven Community Walks to tee up the “CodeNEXT: SOUND CHECK” where the technical writers of the City’s land development code – consultants and professional staff from multiple departments — will collaborate and “check their work.”

Public events and activities will take place every day between Nov. 16 and 21.

“We are climbing out from behind our desks to see how our work is impacting people on the ground. The only way we can do that is in collaboration with everyday Austinites,” said Matt Lewis, Assistant Director for the Planning and Zoning Department. “We often find ourselves looking through the lens of a City planner. As the local expert on where you live, we want to learn what you see.”

Each walk will last one hour, during which residents, business owners and staff are encouraged to share observations and insights. Members of the City Council and Code Advisory Group may also be on hand.

    CodeNEXT Community Walks

Each Community Walk is in one of Austin’s seven “place types,” that include neighborhood nodes, shopping centers and major corridors. Each area is representative of similar places in Austin, so Austinites who live or work outside these areas are encouraged to participate.

These events are free and open to all residents. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP, wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and bring a smartphone to snap photos and share on social media using #CodeNEXT.

CodeNEXT is a priority initiative of Imagine Austin, “our plan for the future.” The Community Walks are part of the initiative’s place-based approach to improving Austin’s land development code – how and where things are built around Austin. A draft development code will be fully available for public review in fall 2016.

More than 100 Austin neighborhoods participated in a self-guided group activity in 2014, called “Community Character in a Box,” which is captured in Austin’s Community Character Manual.

“We have learned so much from this feedback and we need to build on this and get a better understanding of what people love about their neighborhoods and what is not working, so we can resolve it,” Lewis said. “We will be all over Austin the next couple of months and we hope to see you out there.”
